Alternative Brokerage (AB) is a new wholesaling concept for Broker-Dealers, Large Producer Groups, Traditional Insurance Agents, Registered Investment Advisors, Regional Banks and Career Marketing Organizations that wish to expand their product offerings to include fixed, indexed and alternative products. AB provides full service and sales support, acting as a de facto back office and distribution unit for both institutions and individuals.

Managing Director / Founder
Former Chair of NAFA
Phillips launched Alternative Brokerage in early 2013 and serves as the Managing Director of the company. Prior to launch, Phillips spent the previous six years building and leading one of the largest independent marketing and life brokerage groups in the country. Along with building new products and developing new channels in the index annuity and life arena, he has helped facilitate the mergers and acquisitions of several other IMOs and BGAs.
Phillips also serves as the past Chairman of the Board of Directors for the National Association for Fixed Annuities (NAFA). He has also served on numerous carrier and industry boards over the years.
He began his career in the financial services industry in the mid-1980s as a stockbroker for Legg Mason. Later in 1988, he founded his own firm, Phillips and Associates, where he provided financial planning and investment advice to overseas Americans and diplomatic corps in Brazil and the Washington DC area. Additionally, Phillips has been an arbitrator for FINRA/NASD and served as an industry panel chairman since 1995. His extensive background also includes a position as National Sales Director at Principal Financial Group, where he built the independent wholesaling platforms for both the Life Insurance and Non-Qualified Deferred Compensation (COLI) groups. Along with insurance licensing in all 50 states, DC and PR, Phillips has his FINRA series 7, 24, 65 and 63 licenses.

A Virginia Tech alumnus, he has spent most of his life in Virginia and the Carolinas. Phillips is married with a daughter and son. He currently resides in greater Minneapolis, MN and commutes weekly to Des Moines, IA.
Vice President / Operations
Carolyn Torstenson wears many hats at Alternative Brokerage. As our VP of operations, Carolyn also serves as controller/bookkeeper, human resources, corporate licensing and is responsible for all vendor relations. As a small Business owner and former insurance administrator, Carolyn brings her organizational and administrative skills to Alternative Brokerage.
An Iowa State University graduate, Carolyn is married to husband Cam, with two teenage boys, Nathan & Noah and their Golden retriever, Griffin.
Marketing and Administrative Director
Aislinn has been in the industry for 2 years and is the Head of Contracting at Alternative Brokerage. She has specialized certifications in social media and online marketing. She has 4 years of graphic design experience and has always enjoyed any challenge that can improve her skills. Aislinn also enjoys creating websites that are reactive and change for device size automatically.
Aislinn graduated from Drake University with a degree in Marketing and has lived in West Des Moines for the past 3 years. Prior to that she was living in Vermont enjoying hikes up the mountains and horse-back rides everywhere. She enjoys jogging on the bike trails, going to the lakes, and attending local events (such as the Des Moines Farmers Market).
VP, Sales & Business Development
Josh comes to Alternative Brokerage by way of Bankers Life and Casualty. He came into the industry in January 2015 and holds his life and health licenses. Josh received SNA Elite in his first three months as an agent which less than 5% of the company accomplishes. He prides himself on ensuring the needs of all clients are succeeded not just met.
Josh is originally from Montezuma, Ia and currently lives in Bondurant. He is currently serving his 9th year with the Iowa National guard as a Military Police officer. He lives for the outdoors and his an avid hunter and sports fan.
Board of Directors / Consultant
Stout is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Insurance Insight Group, a marketing and recruiting strategy and training consulting firm serving the life insurance and annuity marketplaces. He also serves on the boards of Partners Advantage Insurance Services and the National Association for Fixed Annuities (NAFA). Stout recently received his National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) Governance Fellowship.
Stout is an acknowledged leader in the global financial services business. He has over 30 years of financial services industry experience in the U.S. and abroad, working in Europe, Northern Asia, Africa, and Australia. Prior to joining Insurance Insight Group, Stout was Managing Director of Investments and Insurance with Australia and New Zealand Bank (ANZ), where he was based in Sydney and ran the Australian life insurance, investment, retirement services, general insurance and advice businesses for this large regional Australasian bank. During his time in Australia, he was also Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ING Australia. Prior to that Stout had served as President of ING- Annuities and Life, President and CEO of F&G Life and as Deputy CEO at Old Mutual Financial Network.
Stout is a nationally known speaker and author on financial services. He has also been active in the American Council of Life Insurers and a past member of the board of LIMRA International, the Financial Services Council of Australia, and the Insurance Marketplace Standards Association.
